Weirton

Weirton, West Virginia

Weirton, located in the northern panhandle of West Virginia on the Ohio River, lies 30 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and 28 miles north of Wheeling, West Virginia. Founded in 1909 by industrialist Ernest T. Weir, founder of Weirton Steel Company. Weirton has the amenities of a small town with the accessibility to a world-class airport and metropolitan area.

The community itself actually was started in 1909 by Ernest T. Weir, for whom the city is named, and his associates. When the first Weirton mills were built, some 25 houses were constructed on nearby hillsides. Then, it was more general construction and more houses. Today, there are thousands of new, modern homes blanketing the city. Stores, churches, schools, and everything else that goes into making a town also have increased in number.
