Living up to its Spanish name “beautiful view”, Bella Vista has a unique history and yet enjoys the moniker of being one of the youngest incorporated cities in Arkansas. Incorporated in 2007, Bella Vista had a population of 28,511 in 2017 and is part of the Fayetteville–Springdale–Rogers, AR-MO Metropolitan Statistical Area.
In 1917, brothers Clayton and Forest Linebarger purchased 206 acres for about $6,000. Their intent was to create a summer resort like none other. With a focus on exercise and recreation, they were reachable by car by many early visitors, which added to its allure. Early attractions in the 20’s and 30’s included the 65-room Sunset Hotel, golf, tennis, a dance pavilion and a large swimming pool, along with an underground nightclub inside Wonderland Cave.
The Great Depression and World War II took its toll as the resort towns popularity dwindled, but with the efforts of multiple investors the area continued to grow.
Bordering Missouri to the north, Bella Vista is the northern-most of six large cities located along the Interstate 49 corridor, offering a variety of shopping, educational facilities, health care choices, and abundant recreational opportunities. With its location in the Ozark Mountains, Bella Vista boasts a temperate climate, and offers four distinct seasons, an array of wildlife and beautiful scenery.
