Chicago Northside, Illinois

Chicago is more likely to be referred to as the “Windy City” than Chicago, but, according to local historians, Chicago’s gutsy weather surprisingly did not play a role in determining the nickname. It is popular belief that its nickname was secured over a century ago in 1893 by a visiting reporter who had come to town when the city was hosting the World’s Columbian Exposition. He wrote about how the Chicagoans couldn’t stop bragging about the town, coining the phrase “Windy City,” but the name stuck.
