Maine covers 35,387 square miles and has a population of 1,274,923 people. Maine’s capital is Augusta, which has a population of 18,560. Other important cities are Portland (pop. 62,249), Lewiston (pop.35,690), Bangor (pop. 31,473), South Portland (pop. 23,324), Auburn (pop. 23,203), Brunswick (pop. 14,816), Biddeford (pop. 20,942), Sanford (pop. 10,133) and Scarborough (pop. 16,970).
Maine was admitted to the Union on March 15th, 1820 as the 23rd state. The state flower is the “White Pine Cone and Tassel” and its’ nickname is the “Pine Tree State”. Maine is bordered by Canada to the north, New Hampshireto the south and Atlantic Ocean. Maine’s economy is broken into two categories; agriculture and industry. Seafood, poultry and eggs, potatoes, dairy products, cattle, blueberries and apples provide for the agricultural side. While paper, lumber, and wood products, electric equipment, food processing, leather products, textiles and tourism provide for the industrial side.
