Bandon (also known as Bandon-by-the-sea) is located in Coos County, Oregon and is perched to the south side of the mouth of the Coquille River. It was named by George Bennet who settled nearby in 1873 and named the town after Bandon in Ireland, his hometown.

Bandon’s current economy revolves around wood products, fishing, tourism, and agriculture. The five largest employers in the area include Bandon Dunes Golf Course, Southern Coos Health District, School District #54C, Oregon Overseas Timber, and Hardin Optical.

Bandon is the Cranberry Capital of Oregon. Bandon’s coastal climate combined with its sandy soil offer the perfect growing conditions for cranberries. These conditions have helped Bandon’s cranberries earn worldwide renown. Native to North America, Cranberry plants are actually vines, and they are grown in large rectangular beds known as bogs.

According to the 2016 U.S. census estimates, Bandon has a poulation of 3,134. The median age in Bandon is 50 which is approximately 27% higher than the Oregon average of 39. The Median household income of a Bandon resident is $36,156 a year.

About an hour north of Bandon, Oregon is the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, perfect for hiking, photography, horseback riding or renting a dune buggy.

During the winter months, gray whales can be seen migrating south the last week of December, and then returning north the last week of March.
