Lumberton is a rapidly growing community nestled in the piney woods of Southest Texas that, according to the 1990 census, is now the largest city in Hardin County. According to the U.S. census, 11,943 people live within the boundaries of the 59-square miles that Lumberton covers.

The median income for a household in the city was $45,700, and the median income for a family was $47,184. Males had a median income of $38,315 versus $26,217 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,640. About 5.5% of families and 7.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.0% of those under age 18 and 5.0% of those age 65 or over.
