Overview of University Place
University Place is a city in Pierce County, Washington. With a population of 33,740 according to the US Census estimates of 2019, it is the 36th largest city in Washington State.
The 1800s when the University of Puget Sound, a private liberal-arts college in North Tacoma, purchased land along the primary north-south route of Grandview Drive. The school sought to build a new campus there, but ended up selling the land back to the city for about $11,000. University Place remained an unincorporated part of Pierce County until the City of University Place was formed on August 31, 1995.
The racial makeup of University Place was 69.58% White, 8.04% African American, 0.63% Native American, 9.93% Asian, 0.26% Pacific Islander, 2.4% from other races, and 9.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino persons of any race were 18.1% of the population.
Income and Poverty
The median income for a household in the city was $64,883, and the median income for a family was $82,476. Males had a median income of $45,606 versus $31,068 for females. The per capita income for the city was $40,644. About 11.3% of families were below the poverty line. The largest demographic living in poverty was Females 35 – 44, followed by Males 6 – 11 and then Males 45 -54.
According to RentJungle.com, as of April 2019, average rent for an apartment was $1352. One bedroom apartments rented for $1207 a month on average, and two bedroom apartment rented for an average of $1383.
